Ancelotti Defends Bellingham and Slams Refereeing Standards Amid Controversy
Carlo Ancelotti has made it clear that he has “nothing to say” about the ongoing refereeing controversy involving his Real Madrid side, following Jude Bellingham’s controversial red card on Saturday. However, the Italian coach did express his ongoing dissatisfaction with decisions made against his team.
Bellingham, the England international, received a straight red card in the 39th minute of Real Madrid’s draw with Osasuna, reportedly for uttering the phrase “f*** off” at referee Jose Luis Munuera Montero. Munuera Montero, however, contended that Bellingham actually directed the words “f*** you” at him, leading to the sending off for foul or abusive language.
The incident has sparked widespread debate in Spain, especially given the linguistic nuances between the two expressions. Some media outlets have suggested that Real Madrid’s frustration with the perceived inconsistency in officiating could even lead them to consider distancing themselves from LaLiga.
In the aftermath of the draw, Ancelotti firmly defended his player while continuing to voice his frustration with the officiating in Spain. Speaking ahead of their upcoming Champions League play-off against Manchester City, Ancelotti remarked: “I have nothing to say, I’ve already expressed my opinion on what has happened and what is happening. It’s quite surprising, and I have nothing more to add. We are not happy with what happened against Osasuna, Atlético… three games in which we were disadvantaged, and I don’t understand it.”
Despite his ongoing grievances, Ancelotti expressed less concern over refereeing in Europe, highlighting the better standards in international competitions. “In Europe, there is less controversy and fewer interventions; things are done when necessary,” he said. “In the Champions League, the best referees from each country officiate, and the quality is very high.”
Ancelotti also expressed hope that Bellingham would not face further sanctions for his actions, as the team remains level on points with Barcelona at the top of La Liga.
