Utah Jazz star Donovan Mitchell stated that he didn’t expect to have as good of a rookie season as he did.

In an interview with Sarah Todd of the Deseret News, he elaborated on his difficulty realize how he approached his first season and how well did the things go for him.

“To do what I did my rookie year I was in shock,” Mitchell said on Friday. “To be honest with you I had dreamt of it, but I didn’t expect it to happen so fast for me.”

In the 2017–18 season, Mitchell was trusted with the ball and was handed a lot of time to make his statement. He became the Jazz’s leading scorer, won the dunk contest during All-Star Weekend and was in the conversation for the award Rookie of the Year.

After leading the Jazz to the playoffs for all his seasons with the team and after the crazy stats that he recorded in the playoff series against the Denver Nuggets, he got paid really well. Jazz rewarded him with a five-year max contract extension which could be worth up to $195.6 million.

He will try to make sure that this big contract will not get on his head and have an influence on his work and his identity as a player.

“I’m just gonna continue to do what got me here,” he said. “I’ll continue to be the same person, same player, same work ethic, and everything else will kind of just fall into place and if it doesn’t, that’s how it was meant to be.”

Even if basketball is what should be the top priority for him, he believes that all the actions that he takes off the court and the impact that he can have on this society is far more important to him and that’s why he desires to get involved in divergent ways he can offer his help to anyone who needs it (in general), but especially now with the pandemic and everything is going on in the world.
