Suns demolished 124–95 the Kings on Wednesday night opener game
Devin Booker scored 22 points (10–17 FG, 2–4 3s, 2 rebounds, 10 assists, 1 steal) and Kelly Oubre Jr. had 21 points (8–17 FG, 1–6 3s, 9 rebounds, 1 assist, 1 steal and 2 blocks), DeAndre Ayton added 18 points and 11 rebounds and the Phoenix Suns demolished 124–95 the Sacramento Kings in the first game of the season for both teams.
“We have a lot of potential, but it’s just one game,” Suns point guard Ricky Rubio said. “We have to show it every night. Tomorrow we come back, go to practice and get better.”
Suns head coach Monty Williams was really frustrated with how disobedient point guard Jevon Carter was during the game and coach was forced to yell at him and guide him, but Carter wasn’t really paying heed to him. “Jevon just doesn’t listen to me, that’s pretty much it,” Williams said with a grin. “He just goes nuts, hits shots and defensively he gets all over people. He has selective hearing. I was trying to scream to him to slow down, but he’s a pitbull. That’s what I love about him.”
Kings were led by Buddy Hield who scored 28 points, shooting 10/19 from the field and 6–12 from behind the arc. Marvin Bagley III had 14 points and 10 rebounds in 28 minutes.
If we look at the statistics, Kings made 26 turnovers and Suns had almost half of them (14). The Suns shot 50% from the field (49–98) and 33.3% from the perimeter, while the Kings shot 39.1% and 34.5% respectively. The biggest differences between both teams are the assists and the steals: 31 assists and 13 steals for the Suns and 17 assists and 5 steals for the Kings respectively.
Monty Williams won as a head coach for the first time without having by his side his wife Ingrid, who died in a car accident in 2016 at 44 years old.
“First time I’ve done this without (his wife) Ingrid and that was just different,” Williams said. “A lot of emotions, a lot of good stuff. So thankful my kids were there tonight for the whole game and got to see that. So glad I got to do that with this group.”
